Cooking with herbs is an absolute essential. Adding herbs to your recipes gives them a finishing touch and boosts flavour naturally. It can be tricky knowing which of your herbs to add to which dish, so we've put together this cooking with herbs guides to share the basics of how to use them and some of our ideas for some common meals and which herbs to add!
Salads: Fennel tastes great with celery salad, as the fresh and slightly sweet herb really brings out the best in a tasty, green meal. You could also try putting Greek Basil in some tomato and bell pepper salad, to enhance that peppery flavour. Mint pairs well with potato, so if your looking to make a potato salad make sure to freshen it up with a minty twist. But, if you’d like something even more refreshing, try adding some Coriander to some tomato and cucumber salad, that’ll give it that citrus flair.
Pastas: Topping your pasta with Basil is a great way to add both a strong flavour and a delicious aroma, giving your dish that peppery kick. Sage works in cream and pasta meals because of its earthy and slightly lemony taste, so if you’re looking to try something a little different, this is your go-to. For that authentic-feeling tomato sauce and pasta, throw in some of our fresh Oregano, popular in Italian dishes for a reason. Flat Leaf Parsley is a great choice too, simply top your meal with this herb, then allow its fresh flavour to balance out and lighten that stomach-filling pasta.
Breads: Coriander can be sprinkled on top of naan bread if you’re ready to enjoy its lemony and slightly sweeter taste, and when baked into the bread it has a more floral flavour. What is garlic bread without garlic? Well, Garlic Chives enhance that garlicky taste, though in a much more natural and fresh way, more of what you love but without being overpowering. For that homemade baking, use Green Ginger Rosemary, with both its ginger and Rosemary aromas, you’re home will smell amazing, and your bread will taste just as good.
Vegetables: Roasted potatoes are delicious, but even better when roasted with Thyme, the woodsy and earthy Thyme brings out the natural flavours the potato has, meaning nothing is lost in the roasting process. Rosemary and roasted parsnips are a lovely pair, as the strong taste of the Rosemary blends into the subtle taste of the parsnip, making the perfect balance between the two. Another definite for the table is Tarragon and carrots, as the sweet carrots and the subtly sour and bitter taste of the Tarragon mix together to create a flavour packed meal so good you’ll think it was the dessert.
Soups: Mushroom soup goes great with some onion thrown in, but to make it even better, why not use some refreshing, green Chives instead? Not only tasting amazing but also adding a little vibrant colour to your bowl. Tomato soup is a classic, and so is using Curly Parsley as decoration, but this type of Parsley doesn’t just look good, it also adds a slight crunch of freshness, making it great with soups. Vegetable soup makes us feel cosy inside, but there’s a way to make it even better, and that’s by topping it with some Fennel leaves, which adds a natural sweetness that just completes that comfort feeling.
